What Is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can enter homes through cracks in foundations, sump pits, utility penetrations, and other openings.

According to Health Canada, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is found in homes across Alberta.

Because radon is invisible and odorless, testing is the only way to know your home's radon level.

How Radon Mitigation Works

The most common mitigation method is Active Soil Depressurization (ASD).

This process involves:

  • Creating a suction point beneath the foundation

  • Installing a sealed vent pipe system

  • Using a specialized radon fan to draw soil gases from beneath the home

  • Safely exhausting radon outside the house

Our Radon Mitigation Process

1. Home Assessment

We evaluate your home's construction, foundation layout, and potential radon entry points.

2. System Design

Each mitigation system is customized to maximize performance while minimizing visual impact.

3. Professional Installation

Our systems are installed using industry best practices and quality materials designed for long-term performance.

4. Post-Mitigation Testing

After installation, follow-up testing is recommended to confirm the effectiveness of the system.

FAQ

Q: What is the action level for radon in Alberta?

A: Following Health Canada guidelines, the official action level for radon is 200 Bq/m³ (Becquerels per cubic metre). If your long-term test results come back higher than 200 Bq/m³, mitigation is highly recommended to protect your family's health. However, because there is no truly "safe" level of radon, many Central Alberta homeowners choose to mitigate if their levels fall between 100 Bq/m³ and 200 Bq/m³ to bring them as close to zero as possible.

Q: Why are radon levels so high in Red Deer and Central Alberta?

A: Central Alberta’s geology is naturally rich in underground uranium deposits, which decay into radium and eventually turn into radon gas. Because radon is an invisible, odorless soil gas, it easily seeps into your home through foundation cracks, sump pumps, and floor drains. During our long, cold Alberta winters, the "stack effect" acts like a vacuum—as warm air rises and escapes from the upper levels of your house, it actively pulls the radon-heavy soil gases up through the basement slab.

Q: What is Active Soil Depressurization (ASD) and how does it work?

A: Active Soil Depressurization is the gold standard for radon reduction and the primary method we use. Instead of trying to seal every single microscopic crack in your concrete, we change the pressure dynamics under your home.

We drill a precise suction hole through your foundation slab, install a sealed PVC vent pipe system, and attach a continuous-duty, ultra-quiet radon fan. This fan runs 24/7, pulling the radon gas out from beneath the house before it ever enters your living space, and safely venting it outside where it instantly dilutes to harmless levels.

Q: Do new homes in Alberta already have radon systems built in?

A: Since 2015, the Alberta Building Code has required new homes to include a basic radon rough-in (a capped pipe extending beneath the concrete slab). However, this is a passive feature and does not actively pull gas out of the home. If your new build tests high, we can easily adapt that existing rough-in pipe into a fully functioning, active system by installing a specialized inline fan and proper exterior venting.

Q: How do I know if my radon mitigation system is working?

A: Every system we install features a u-tube manometer mounted directly on the system pipe. This is a simple visual pressure gauge that uses colored liquid to show the vacuum pressure inside the pipe. If the liquid lines are uneven, it confirms the fan is actively pulling suction beneath your slab. For absolute peace of mind, we also offer post-mitigation testing at a additional cost using advanced continuous radon monitors to verify that your indoor air levels have successfully dropped below the action threshold.
